Great report Nigel. I must agree it’s a vastly under rated river, probably due to the poor write up in the Welsh Rivers Guide. Nevertheless it gives us another option any time the level is ok and well worth doing.

A good meeting Tim with all points made being positive and keeping us going in the right direction. Best of all looks like we’ve finally decided on a logo.

Nice report Tim. let’s hope we can catch it at that level before too long.
You make it sound so inviting.

Another great report Nigel with all the detail for future reference. It ended up another great day but one to reflect on. Like Tim says it seems to be the grade 2 stuff and man made features that cause the major hazards.
Gives us something to talk about at the Committee meeting on Thursday !

Excellent report Nigel and it’s a great feeling to know we all came off buzzing. Ever thought of writing a Welsh river guide book ?
I remember the coach who took us on the whitewater safety and rescue course ( who had paddled grade 4, grade 5, Alps paddling and many other countries ) saying some of his best paddles have been on Grade2/3 rivers, worth a thought !!

Good report Tim. Have to agree The Alwen was much better than expected. Most of the information on the Alwen didn’t make great reading, just goes to show you need to do things yourself to get a true picture. The get in was the easiest ever, couldn’t have parked any closer unless we’d parked in the river ! Nice simple get out after the last drop, 20 metre walk out to the road. Fun all the way down especially the grade 3 section a few hundred metres below the Ceirw confluence. Great day and thanks to Nigel for his help and pictures.

Cheers Barry. I think that explains why I’ve put on weight !!

Well said Tim. Let’s keep it going. We paddled over 50 times last year as a club, so averaging at least a paddle per week. With around 50 pool sessions included we appear to be a fairly active, healthy club !! How come I’ve put on weight !

A good band of rain is sweeping across the country this evening which should bring both the Ceiriog or Gam up to a decent level, so it looks like it will be either of those but more likely the Gam as Barry and Nigel ran it on Thursday and only one tree was down. The Ceiriog may need a recce before we try that again as on our last visit there were multiple trees down and we decided it would be wise to go elsewhere.
If the Banwy gauge is on 1.6 or above in the morning the Gam should be a good paddle. Their is also the option of the Vyrnwy which is also close to the Gam so wouldn’t be too far to detour (currently on 1.25) but should rise with the forecast rain. So final decision in the morning but meet at the Stewpony at 8.30 or Dobbies for 9.15ish.

We’ve had a fantastic response to the curry night and thanks to everyone for replying so swiftly. Here is a list of the people who have said yes to coming. This is so that you can make arrangements for transport and to share lifts with people local to yourself or book taxis if necessary.. Another reason is I need to count up the numbers as the table was booked for 18 and I think we now have more than that. Here is the list, in no particular order :-
Me, Tim, Barry, Dave Yates, Dave Bennett, Geoff & Kee, Rich Probert, Gary Wood, Nigel, Rob, John Teuwen, Mick O’brien, Paul Williams, Simon & Anto, Ricki, Chucky, Zaf, Mark Watson and Nick Preece,
I booked for 18 but now make that 21, so we do need a bigger table !!
If I have missed anyone, my apologies but please let me know asap.
Gary has pointed out that directly opposite Ishas is the Windsor Castle pub, an independent brewer, (Sadlers) who sell real ales etc. If anyone wants to go earlier and have a pint there first we’ll sort it at the pool session on Thursday and post something up for those that aren’t at the pool.
Don’t forget you can bring your own drinks to Ishas to save running up a bar bill.
