Well done Rich D passing the Level 1 coaching course. You’ve worked hard and I hope you’ve gained a good insight into the process of coaching paddlesport and improved your own paddling skills along the way. You must be all coursed out after squeezing the first aid course in as well recently. You’ve sacrificed a couple of river trips but its worth it in the long run. Thanks also to Barry and John for taking time out to coach Rich open boating.
If you get chance Rich it would be useful if you could share your views on the course and the journey towards getting this award. Bad knees and all! What did you find most challenging? What was most useful? What was less useful? Could we have prepared better prior to the course?
Nigel, Chucky, Rob, Kee, Dave and Barry have shown an interest in becoming a Level 1 coach. Lets work together towards achieving this. Rich will be a great mentor for you all! You will need a FSRT and 2 star award. I can teach the 2 star. Mick has looked at the finances and has suggested we can help Rich with 50% of the course cost. Hopefully we can continue to do this for future courses but nothing is set in stone as it will depend upon the financial situation at the time.
Well done Rich!

Coach Rich :o) that has a nice ring to it… Well doneNovember 5, 2013 at 8:49 am #2243Richard DParticipantThanks guys, hopefully others will be inspired to help out with the coaching at the club and learn a few things on the way. Tim has mentioned a few names and you all have the potential to become level 1 coaches and help others progress.
It was a very enjoyable course that involved organising two straightforward coaching sessions, one in kayak (0n the 2nd day) and one in open canoe (on day 3).
Simple 20 minute sessions to include a 2 minute safety brief beforehand, then the lesson. I chose stern rudder in kayak and moving sideways in a canoe i.e draw strokes so nothing difficult.
We then had an afternoon of rescues i.e. Aid a swimmer in several ways including use of a throwline,Capsize in kayak and canoe and retrieve your boat and gear to shore. T rescue, Eskimo rescue, hand of God, capsize and re enter the boat with assistance from another paddler, both kayak and canoe. Followed by the chaotic all in rescue involving all 12 of us, half in canoe half in kayaks. next year their is a time limit to achieve this ! Fortunately that’s next year, as it took us over 13 minutes we’d have had to do it again or fail. !!
Alltogether a great course though and I have to say I enjoyed the open boating too, so thanks to Barry for the use of his boat and Tim and John for the open boat coaching and giving up their time to help.
If anyone fancies doing it and has any questions I’ll be at the club on Thursday, best ask soon before I forget everything !November 6, 2013 at 8:07 am #2250Paul WParticipantWell done Rich – never a doubt that you wouldn’t pass.
