A beautiful start to a Saturday, the sun is up and so are we, off to Dobbies, to meet up.
Barry, Dave, Steve a Newby, young man called Jake and my good self, we set off and arrived in weather similar to” IBIZA”, only without the music and scantily clad young ladies.
After parting with 3 whole english pounds to park for the day and dropping off the shuttle we headed for the river, Dave and the Newby Jake, decided to warm up at the raft get in and tackle NRA wave and Chapel, interesting way to warm up Mr Y, while waiting I decided to set up safety just after the bridge on NRA, in case we had any need. A good move on my part, while waiting for Dave and Jake, I spot a lone paddler who miss judged NRA and was unable to roll, he looked a little perturbed when he surfaced, blade in one hand and boat above him, I confirmed he required assistance by calling out and threw him a welcome line then towed him to shore, he recovered his boat just down from Chapel with the aid of another paddler. (Moral here Guy’s don’t paddle alone !) Now Mr Y and Jake, only his 3rd time ever on moving water in as many weeks and paddling a New boat, he nailed both NRA and Chapel, AWESOME.
We all join forces at Chapel and carried on our trip, lots of new eddies made and great fun had trying new techniques along with challenging ones own skills. The weather was just beautiful and the cooling water a real treat. We were all convinced young Jake was a robot, he has a real flair for this sport and hardly put a blade wrong. We arrived at Bala Mill Falls, Barry and I opted for the leet to organise safety. Rumour had it a slalom event was being hosted, but no signs or warnings were in place meant we were unsure, so the other three Musketeers headed on down to the falls. Barry and I arrived and set up Safety at the bottom and yes we met with the Slalom event, these folks were very unhelpful and not at all considerate to us fellow “water babes”, they expected the guy’s to portage at the top of Bala Mill Falls, ???? Hello, I don’t think so!!! Once you commit to the run in your committed to the falls! After, “Texas Chain Saw Baz”, exchanged a few pleasantries with some spotty jobs worth teenager wearing some over size head phones. The Guy’s ran the feature, a huge well done to Steve, who ran it for the first time and with great success, without even a viewing and superb well done to The Master, Jake, who made it look very straight forward. Through the stripy poles we went avoiding any issues and onward toward the takeout.
That river never ceases to impress me, it is a real character builder.
Big thanks to Barry, Dave, Steve and Jake ( Jackson ) for a really splendid day.
Cheers 😉
