Today we made the most of the very welcome rainfall and Team Wombourne was represented by Barry, Rich D, Tim and John. I ran this river a few years ago with Mark and remembered that is was technical with a fair few tree hazards but offering great potential for those wanting twisty, technical grade 3 rapids. Something a bit different at the grade. During the Summer Barry cleared out loads of branches providing us with the opportunity to run the river today.
Rule number 1. Get Tim to buy the breakfast subs at Subway because the emergency services get a ten per cent discount.
Rule number 2. Always inspect the river. All of the major features were inspected before the river was run. One major tree needed cutting out and Barry and Rich demonstrated brilliant Arboriculture skills and removed the hazard.
Rule number 3. Always chat with the local village idiots. Why do we always attract them?
Rule number 4. Set up bank support. John decided to miss out the first drop and provided cover below the rapid and Barry provided cover directly upon the rapid. Rich decided to get intimate with a submerged pyramid rock which guards the entrance to this grade 3+ rapid and Barry provided the necessary assistance to pull him off as it were.
Rule number 4. Try to get a nice photo paddling under the Roman Bridge. Next time.
Rule number 5. Have a coffee and a team debrief at Dobbies but don’t ask Tim to work the coffee machine. Wrong size cup, missed the water being poured in, forgot to stir, forgot the cardboard around the outside and couldn’t fit the friggin lid on!
Thanks lads for a great day out. Barry didn’t paddle today and provided cover all the way down the river. What can you say?

This river provides a real natural river feel with 4 distinct grade 3 technical rapids and loads of challenging features. A short run that could be run 3 or 4 times in a day if you wanted to perfect lines and improve skills with each run.
Personally I thought it was at a good level but with no gauge on the river, for future reference, the Banwy gauge at Llanerfyll was on 1.9 in the morning and 1.83 when we got started.April 1, 2015 at 10:49 am #3943adminMemberWell worth the trip, I might attempt the 1st rapid next time, but quite daunting when you look down into the “Mix”, knowing that there are rocks underneath. Thanks for a great day.
