It’s great that as a club, after a bit of rain we can find paddles to suit everyone. So on Saturday we split into two groups. The younger group consisting of Ricki, Dave, Andy & Keelan were heading up to the lakes to run the Leven on a good medium level around 1.05. According to AA route planner this was a journey of 194 miles and 3.5 hours ( although Ricki reckoned he could do it in 2.5 hours in his new car ! hope no police are reading this ). Footage of this trip now on Facebook courtesy of Geoff.
The older crew, consisting of myself, Barry, John, Rob, Gary and Kev (sorry Kev ) decided a 400 mile round trip needed a weekend away with a couple of rivers to run to make it worthwile. So we opted for a 2 hour 90 mile trip to the Wnion. Low water on the Wnion is 1.8 to 1.9 and the gauge was on 1.78 so lower than we had hoped, but as this was to be Kevin’s first trip on anything more than Jackfield it would still be a challenge at mostly Grade 2 with a grade 3 rapid and a grade 3+ ledge drop. We put on at the campsite at Bontnewydd which had previously been used by some members for the Mawdach estuary weekend. This is a beautiful river with crystal clear water and some stunning views around Snowdonia and Cader Idris. Although it was a bit scrapey at the put in, this section had far more features than expected and at 1.9 to 2.0 metres would be well worth coming back to do again. Well done Kev on an incident free first real outing with the club. Oh, and well done to Gary for putting his point across to the fisherman (retired police officer ! ) who thought kayakers were causing damage to the Salmon !!
Another great day finished off nicely with a pint and bowl of chips at the usual stopping off point just outside Welshpool.October 12, 2014 at 6:20 pm #3238adminMemberSounds a grt day Rich. Thanks 4 the mention.well done kev, onwards and up!

October 12, 2014 at 9:52 pm #3240NigelParticipantGreat report as usual Rich,
It really is good to read about the adventurous nature of our club, taking the initiative and accommodating all abilities. I am sad to have missed this weekend but Fatherly duties took priority this week. Sounds and looks like you all had a great time. Cheers 😉October 13, 2014 at 9:51 am #3241TimMemberWell done both trips! Please keep safety as the priority. Groups of three, four and five are great. Keep an eye open for trees down and inspect around blind bends!
October 13, 2014 at 7:24 pm #3242adminMemberSafety as the priority; ratchet up your boat before attempting the grade 3+ ledge drop!!!!!!!!!!!!! I gave the observers something to think about!
October 13, 2014 at 7:27 pm #3243adminMemberSafety as the priority; make sure Gary is on a lead when local and vocal fisherman are around as they don’t stand a chance! Otherwise another brilliant day on a new river.
October 13, 2014 at 7:31 pm #3244adminMemberI just had an email promoting the Cage Warriors Fighting Championship, I think we have our own champion after last Saturday.
October 14, 2014 at 4:47 am #3245TimMemberI’ve witnessed Gary give somebody “what for ” at the leisure centre. I’m glad the pool night is after the watershed of 9 o clock!
October 17, 2014 at 7:23 pm #3253RickiParticipantA great day for all. An interesting situation with the Salmon protector. Although I have a lot of respect for people who look after the fish and fisherman in our rivers, I’m sure they can appreciate we do not intentionally kill fish or eggs. Should the argument be, surely we do not hook them onto a line by the mouth to launch them from the water or put them in a net them for hours to eat them. Although, I am partial to a bit of Salmon!
As to the drive, I think I actually managed ‘around’ 2.5 hours through leaving at around 8am. Using the preposition ‘around’ is a rather loose word is a safe means. However, over 70mph with four boats on the roof of a new car would be silly, so surely justifies my position to my ‘blue light’ friends!
October 17, 2014 at 7:33 pm #3254adminMemberThanks Ricki, Dave and Keelan, for your support and guidance on the Leven.
And looks like all had a fantastic day out…
