Today, myself and Barry did a clean up and recce on the Twrch. I’ve run it with Mark in the past and would like it to become a regular club run in the future.
Here are a few notes to refer to when the river next comes up.
1. Get in at the bridge next to the telephone box.
2. Approximately 200 yards down stream is a boundary wire across the river with a warning notice on a tree river left. A hook on the left can be used to remove the wire.
3. A grade 2 rapid is reached runnable river left with a large amount of branch debris river right.
4. An island (if still there in higher water) is an early warning of two grade 3 rapids. Both are run river right with a large amount of branch debris river left.
5. A house is passed on river left
6. Two grade 3 rapids follow. Both are run river right with tight left turns. One of them has a build up of debris river left.
I would advise inspecting all of the grade 3 rapids on this run from the bank. There are definite horizon lines and boxed in sections requiring good quick paddle work. The right bank would be the easier option for inspecting. The last two grade 3 rapids could be inspected following a footpath from Foel before paddling the river. I think it may also be possible to inspect the first two grade 3 rapids before committing to the river using a concessionary footpath we spotted whilst walking back to the car. We will investigate!
I am really looking forward to running this one again and just like the Gam we are doing everything to make it as safe as possible. It is a difficult to maintain line of sight on the grade 3s and therefore we need to consider bank support.
Thanks Barry! The places we go!
