Hello club members. Have your say! Weve had great attendance for pool sessions in recent weeks, which is great for the club funds but can create headaches in terms of logistics. Weve always had a relaxed open door policy with no need to book. It would be a shame to have to change this. 20 is probably a safe limit for the pool but this can depend on the ability level of the paddlers. So the question is ‘how shall we manage Thursday nights? Here are a few of my ideas.
1. On busy nights we can split the pool in two. Rolling clinic one side working in pairs. Safety rescues the other side again working in pairs. A coach each side supervising the session.
2. Carry on as we are. On busy nights we give priority to club members to use the session and may have to disappoint non members.
I look forward th your views.

August 14, 2013 at 5:11 pm #1824TimMemberThanks rob. I will arrive early tomorrow with a white board and write down what people fancy doing. We will take it from there. I may start doing one star training with absolute beginners. Lets see who turns up.
August 14, 2013 at 10:39 pm #1827ChuckyParticipantWhile I do not want to discourage new members to split the pool in half and run sessions like that would defeat the point of me coming to the pool sessions. From the point of view I would not be able to practise play boating.
I would not mind helping in some of the sessions.
It would be a long way to come on an evening not to paddle.
As for a solution I cannot provide one sadly 🙁August 15, 2013 at 8:08 am #1828TimMemberThanks for your input Chucky and the offer of helping in some of the sessions. I guess we all come to the pool session for different reasons. My aim now is to find out what folks want from the session and we can put things in place to make it happen.
August 17, 2013 at 6:45 am #1831RickiParticipantI guess if 20 is the limit, then it doesn’t make any difference whether the pool sessions are formal or informal. I would also agree with Chucky about play boating and I am also free to help out. In my opinion, roll clinics make you feel like your time is wasted by sitting at the edge of the pool, and the distance is also a long way to commit for resulting little pool time. If it gets too much, I guess a new members ‘cap’ in the pool could be an option, with any new members having to book their first session/s, with membership guaranteeing pool availability. However, I joined the club on the basis it is welcoming, informal and open….and has a weekly pool session and pub meet up.
As a real alternative, we could turn up with manikini’s to scare a few out of the pool instead. Apparently, Chucky has a wardrobe full of them to donate for ‘club wear’. He is reluctant to hand them on though, as he wants to sport them mowing the lawn in his new house!
August 17, 2013 at 10:54 am #1832TimMemberThanks Ricki . We could always have a mankini night! We had three main groups working Thursday. Rich P took a group for support strokes, Rich D instructed forward paddling and I instructed rolling with Barry and Kee instructing as well. This session worked a treat, and plenty of space freed up for people who wanted to do their own thing, which is exactly what Rob predicted. There was plenty of room to practice play boat moves. The feedback from everyone was positive and there was no need to rope the pool off. This way of doing things will only work if the paddlers think about what they would like to get from the session and let us know. If they just want to do their own thing, that’s fine. At least we know. Putting people into groups also made things better from a safety point of view. Anyway enough of me rattling on. Keep on rockin! Tim
August 18, 2013 at 8:22 pm #1834ChuckyParticipantMankini ? Lucky I only have a small amount a lawn to mow at my new house :p that’s if it hasn’t died while I have been sunning it up over here in canada.
Kayaking the Ottawa river tomra hopefully 🙂August 19, 2013 at 9:57 pm #1835adminMemberI can only spk personally but I only tend to paddle one week on and help old John with his rolling the other anyway.so option wise perhaps try structured session one week and see how it goes you may find more room than you think for the play boaters its worth a shot if only to add more confidence to the beginners. Then a week back as normal .lets give it a go.
August 21, 2013 at 8:49 am #1836adminMemberYep..try it out.
As long as no ply boaters are hurt… 🙂August 21, 2013 at 5:48 pm #1838ChuckyParticipantZaf I don’t think it is the playboaters that get hurt normally it’s the people in the big boats that get in the way :p
But on a more serious note what is gonna be happening at the pool tomra ?
Hopeful I should be thereAugust 22, 2013 at 4:40 pm #1842TimMemberCheers Chuck
